Readers First!

The Santa Clara County Library District is proud to be a part of the ReadersFirst working group, a collection of libraries seeking to improve the overall eBook user experience for library patrons.

As its initial step, ReadersFirst has created a buyer’s guide to help librarians assess the major library eBook distributors' platforms and advocate for more open and user friendly e-lending services. These evaluations draw from self-reported surveys completed by distributors' representatives and submitted to ReadersFirst in spring 2013.

Libraries wishing to become general members of the ReadersFirst movement may do so by signing an agreement to call upon publishers and eBook distributors to adhere to four key ReadersFirst principles, allowing our readers to do the following:

  1. Search one comprehensive catalog to access all of a library’s offerings
  2. Place holds, check out and renew items, view availability, manage fines, and receive communications within the single source the library has determined will serve their users best (website, catalog, or other)
  3. Seamlessly enjoy a variety of e-content
  4. Download e-books that are compatible with all reading devices
