Reading Program Tutors Change Lives

It’s true! One-on-one tutoring is priceless.

Many students need very specific support to meet their personal and professional goals. Here is a wonderful success story from a current tutor, Martha, about her student, Leticia. They meet regularly at the Gilroy Library.
It was exciting to be matched with my learner Leticia since I knew this was a blessing for both of us. I had been in nursing and knew that I could help Leticia meet her major literacy goal, passing her Certified Nurse Assistant exams. We met a few times in a two-week period before she would take her exam. I realized that she had memorized the answers to the exam questions but didn’t know every medical or English term on the test. I had her practice the test using a book from the library, which had five written exams in it. I answered her questions and had her slow down on her reading since sometimes she placed words in or misread sentences. We got through all five exams and spent one week working on the skills test.

We were thrilled that she passed her written test but needed a bit more practice on the skills’ part.  We had three weeks to concentrate on the skills and she did very well, as we focused on the remaining challenges. I made myself available as needed and encouraged her to believe that she would pass. We became a team, although she would be the one taking the test. A few days later, she passed her skills test.  She is now a Certified Nurse Assistant ready to move from Housekeeping to C.N.A. after 18 years in this field.

When asked about her experience with the tutoring program, Leticia said “My tutor has helped me in all ways, from explaining what the meanings of medical terms were, to helping me practice the skills. This is the reason why I passed the test and became a Certified Nurse Assistant. Now, my dream of helping others is possible because of the help my tutor gave me.”
