Welcome New Literacy Specialist, Nathalie!

Hi, I’m Nathalie. I am a Literacy Specialist for Gilroy and Morgan Hill libraries. I taught ESL for 5 years and have been working in the adult literacy field for the last 11 years. I Live in San Martin with my husband, my daughter Abigail and our two dogs, Lucy and Kush.

What is your professional background?
I spent the first few years of my professional life working in the business field but back in 1998, while I was living in Barcelona, Spain, I was given the opportunity to teach ESL. It was a new, rewarding and life-changing experience that fundamentally reshaped my career path. I then taught ESL in France, in my sweet little home town of Angers (oh! I forgot to mention, I am French), then on Reunion Island, an island off the coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean and finally in East Palo Alto, California. Prior to joining the Reading Program with Santa Clara County Library in 2014, I worked as a Literacy Specialist for San Mateo County Library for 9 years.

Why do you like being a Literacy Specialist?
I like being a Literacy Specialist because it gives me plenty of opportunities to fully express my creativity and love of learning while providing the support our tutors and students need. I feel fortunate working with wonderful tutors who are smart, personable, and generous with their time and wise advice. I have the utmost respect for our students, who commit to literacy programs, in order to better their lives and fulfill their dreams.

What’s your specialty?
I like creating handouts, looking for new resources and providing fun yet practical series of workshops to address the needs of our students. I also believe in creating strong partnerships with other agencies in the community in order to provide reliable referrals to our students and tutors.

What are your personal likes and dislikes?
I love cooking. The beach is my ‘happy’ place. I like dark chocolate, may be a little too much, but I love the fact that research says it is actually good for you! I feel best when surrounded by nature. I like watching sunsets, taking pictures and love to travel. I don’t like following recipes. I don’t like getting up early except when I need to get to an airport. I don’t like shopping and avoid going to the mall as much as possible.

Here are some of my favorite pictures...
