Summertime: Ready, Set, Read!

Reading By Design, this year's Summer Reading theme for Santa Clara County Library, begins June 1st and runs through July 31st.

In addition to challenging yourselves to read 5 or more books, adults can change things up by choosing reading materials that have similar themes to books their children might read. For example, try the following pairing:

Pax by Sara Pennypacker
A Dog's Purpose
A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron

Both Pax and A Dog's Purpose are told at least partially from the perspective of animals. Children will be drawn to the strong bond between 12-year-old Peter and Pax, the fox he took in as a kit and cared for until circumstances out of their control separated them. Similarly, adults will be moved by the spirit of the dog in A Dog's Purpose that goes through several reincarnations, making it possible for the dog to be with his beloved Ethan as he is growing up and then again as he faces old age.

So come to the library! Sign up your whole family for Summer Reading, and see how you can spark discussions about what you all choose to read.
