Discover the Maker in You!
by
Jeannie Takagi Hsu, Library Assistant II
September 25, 2017
In October, SCCLD will be hosting four different types of maker programs throughout the library district and debuting RoboDraw!
RoboDraw
Take a selfie like no other at the official debut of RoboDraw coming in October to each library location!
The RoboDraw is a robotic arm that has been custom built & coded for the Santa Clara County Library District. It will take your photo and you can watch as the robotic arm draws your picture before your eyes! The robot uses a program called Squiggledraw which moves the arm in two directions creating the photo image. Keep an eye out for further announcements about the unveiling of the RoboDraw.
Our workshops are geared towards adults & teens. Seating is limited and advanced registration is required. To find your preferred workshop, visit

Workshop 1- Arduino
In this class, you will learn how to use an Arduino in simple projects. We will cover programming simple electronics such as switches, dials, sensors, lights and other output devices. The two hours will include instruction, hands-on and some free time to experiment.

Workshop 2- 2D Sketching and Design:
One of the best ways to communicate an idea is through pictures or drawing--especially for engineers. The purpose of this workshop is to give you the basics of engineering sketching and drawing.
This workshop is an introductory hands-on demonstration of concepts such as sketching basic shapes as well as more complex forms, the mechanics and methods of two-point perspective, and creating the illusion of shade and casting shadows. The goal is to get students generating ideas, and sketching them as accurately as possible without inhibiting the creative process.
Monday, October 2, 7:00-8:45 PM, MORGAN HILL LIBRARY
Wednesday, October 4, 6:30-8:30 PM, GILROY LIBRARY

Workshop 3- 3D Design:
This course takes you through the interface, tools, and key processes of this industry-leading design system. The main techniques are sketching, parts modeling, assembly building, and drawing. Create a sketch; turn the sketch into a 3D part with Extrude, Revolve, and Loft commands; combine parts into assemblies; and document your designs. Each of these methods works in conjunction with the others, allowing you to create 3D ready parts and assemblies.
By the end of class, you will have an understanding of 3D modeling, dimensioned sketches and much more!

Wednesday, October 25, 6:30-8:30 PM, GILROY LIBRARY
Workshop 4- 3D Printing:
3D printing allows you to quickly and easily take a physical object from a computer model, literally printing the part as it goes. This is an easy way to prototype your parts before machining or molding.
Learn how to import, prepare, and print your three-dimensional (3D) parts using the Cura software. In the class we also cover the hardware of the 3D printer, the software and parameters, and troubleshooting for common personal printers. By the end of session, you will have information and knowledge necessary to prepare a 3D print and begin creating your models.
