Technology shrinks the world

139_1909586-W.jpgWhen I was an adventurous 20-something, I spent a year living and working in the People's Republic of China.   In 1992, my communications were limited to snailmail and the occasional collect phone call.  To call the US, I had to get to the post office during open hours and make a very expensive collect call. Mail, even airmail, took 2-3 weeks to travel back and forth.

Now, with email and social media, my experience would be completely different.  Whenever I travel, I post photos to Facebook and share my experience almost instantaneously.  Email travels back and forth instantly - no more waiting for letters to arrive.

How does technology affect the immigrant experience?  We'd love to learn about your experiences.  Post a comment below and tell us what it's like.
