Silicon Valley Reads 2016
by
Gail Mason, Library Services Manager for Collections and Reading Services
January 27, 2016
Too little rain . . . too much rain. Either case of extreme weather can dramatically impact everyday life.
Silicon Valley Reads 2016
explores the effects of climate change with its theme “Chance of Rain”, featuring the books
Memory of Water
by

and
Sherwood Nation
by
Benjamin Parzybok.
This topic is particularly relevant to drought-stricken Santa Clara County. While we welcome the recent rains brought on by El Niño, experts state that they have yet to reverse the effects of four years of drought.
Silicon Valley Reads
offers the opportunity to examine the impacts of resource scarcity and how we as a society choose to react to it.
Santa Clara County Library District
is proud to co-sponsor
Silicon Valley Reads
, an annual community reading program focused on a contemporary theme and providing a forum where our diverse community can come together to share different perspectives.

About the Books
Memory of Water
takes place far in the future where the world has changed after prolonged periods of extreme weather conditions and wars over scarce resources. In Noria’s village, water is strictly rationed by the military and her knowledge of a secret spring puts her and her friends in danger. It’s an overwhelming responsibility for a 17-year-old who just wants to perfect her skills as a tea master.
In
Sherwood Nation
, residents of Portland, Oregon are limited to one gallon of water a day, but, as is often the case, the privileged are somehow able to get more. Frustrated and angry, one neighborhood fights against the establishment to create a more equitable government under the leadership of a barista rebel, nicknamed Maid Marian by the media. This contemporary tale pits young idealism against the harsh brutality of limited resources.
Two companion books for children have also been selected.
The Storm in the Barn
by Matt Phelan
Recommended for grades 4 and up.
Water is Water
by Miranda Paul
Recommended for grades Pre-K to 2.
