20 Years of Summer Blockbuster Movies

It seems like blockbuster movies have been around forever. Steven Spielberg is sometimes credited with starting the summer blockbuster trend with Jaws in 1975. Let’s take a look back at the big summer hits of the past 20 years. These movies are all available at an SCCLD library near you.

1995: Apollo 13Fact: Brad Pitt turned down Apollo 13 to star in Se7en.
1996: Independence Day. Fact: Jeff Goldblum repeats one of his lines from Jurassic Park: “Must go faster, must go faster!”
1997: Men in Black
1998: Armageddon Fact: The cast wore real NASA spacesuits.
1999: TIE The Sixth Sense and The Blair Witch Project. Fact: The Blair Witch Project was shot in 8 days.
2000: Gladiator Fact: Actor Oliver Reed, who played Proximo, died during filming, and his face was CGI’d over a body double for many scenes.
2001: Shrek Fact: Shrek is based on a picture book of the same name.
2002: The Bourne Identity. Fact: The name Bourne comes from Ansel Bourne, who in 1887 forgot who he was, moved to a new state with a new name and a new job.
2003: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl  Fact: Johnny Depp wore contact lenses that also served as sunglasses to keep him from squinting during filming.
2004: Spider Man 2 Fact: Sam Raimi also directed the cult movies Evil Dead and Army of Darkness.
2005: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Fact: All of the clone troopers in the movie are CGI.
2006: Mission: Impossible III Fact: Tom Cruise did most of his own stunts.
2007: The Bourne Ultimatum
2008: The Dark Knight Fact: Heath Ledger designed the Joker makeup.
2009: Star Trek Fact: This was the feature film debut for Chris Hemsworth (see: 2011)
2010: Inception Fact: The first letter of the main characters (Dom, Robert, Eames, Arthur, Mal and Saito) spells DREAMS.
2011: Thor Fact: Tom Hiddleston auditioned for the part of Thor as well as Loki.
2012: The Avengers Fact: The code name for the movie during filming was “Group Hug.”
2013: Pacific Rim
2014: Guardians of the Galaxy Fact: Vin Diesel recorded his line “I am Groot” in several languages, providing his voice for the film’s release in many countries.
