Learning About Holidays Around the World

Do you ever wonder about the daily life of children and families in other parts of the world? With the holidays quickly approaching have you ever wanted to know what other people do to celebrate?

Lucky for you we have a great database that shares information about what a celebration might look like. CultureGrams kid edition can be found on our kids research page under customs and accessed with your library card and pin number. The kids edition will give you a birds-eye view of daily life.

For example, did you know that in Brazil the Amigo secreto (secret friend) is a common tradition among friends and family at Christmastime. At the beginning of December, people write their name on a piece of paper, and each participant then takes a piece of paper but does not reveal the name of the person on it. Throughout the month, participants use apelidos (fake names) to send and exchange notes. They then gather on Christmas to reveal their amigo secreto and exchange special gifts with them. Sounds like the Secret Santa exchange that is popular in the United States!

Be sure to check it out and learn what life is like is other countries.
