Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Ellie Kemper

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a new comedy series on Netflix produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. Kimmy Schmidt has just been released from 15 years in a bunker in small town Indiana and has moved to New York City to discover all that the world has to offer.
The show stars Ellie Kemper (The Office, Bridesmaids), Tituss Burgess (30 Rock), and Jane Krakowski (Ally McBeal, 30 Rock).

I love the show for Kimmy's eternal wide-eyed optimism and her relationship with her hilarious roommate Titus. The writing and acting is impeccable, and it's got a great message of positivity and female empowerment- as the theme song says, "females are strong as hell!"

30 Rock
This TV series was also produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and features some of the same irreverent writing.

Parks and Recreation
Parks and Recreation was produced by Greg Daniels, who also produced the Office, where Ellie Kemper made her name.  There are some similarities between Parks & Rec's Leslie Knope's positivity & empowerment and Kimmy Schmidt.

This is my favorite Tom Hanks comedy, directed by Penny Marshall.  Hanks plays wide-eyed innocent boy transformed through magic into a man who must adjust to life in New York City.

This 1995 movie is a retelling of Jane Austen's Emma. The characters, much like the characters in Kimmy Schmidt, are truly clueless and funny.

A Girl Named Zippy
Haven Kimmel's memoir is a funny peek into her quirky upbringing in small town Indiana.
