A Perfect Day for Digging

Written by Cari Best and Illustrated by Christine Davenier

This is a delightfully fun read-aloud just in time for spring.  This book is a great way to introduce the concept of gardening for children in preschool through second grade, by depicting a young girl Nell and her dog Rusty joyfully digging up the dirt.  The pencil and ink illustrations are large, colorful and active, as the dirt sprays up behind Rusty’s paws and Nell’s trowel.  By contrast, Nell’s friend Norman does not like to get dirty, sitting on top of the fence well out of the way.  However, eventually even he can’t resist the fun that is to be had getting dirty, discovering buried treasures and planting pansies.
