The New Literacy Specialist, Amanda

Hi I'm Amanda and I am the Literacy Specialist for the North County libraries (Milpitas,Cupertino, Campbell, Los Altos and Saratoga)  within Santa Clara County Library District. I have been teaching English for  the last 10 years and have been working in the adult literacy field for the last  6 years. I currently live with my husband in San Jose, CA.

What is your professional background?

My bachelor's degree is in English with an emphasis in writing. I have been teaching English to children, youth and adults for the last 10 years while I was living in Los Angeles and Orange County. For several years, a large portion of my private teaching clientele were Kia and Hyundai Corporate employees who came abroad to the U.S. to work as resident engineers. I was able to help them improve their English skills to not only communicate better with their worldwide vendors, but also helped them feel more confident when interacting with their supervisors and coworkers.

Prior to joining the Reading Program, I was the director of a learning academy, a strategic development coordinator at a broadcasting company and a management analyst at the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters. Lastly, for t
he last four years, I have been serving as a board member for the YWCA-Greater Los Angeles because of my passion for education, workforce development, empowerment of girls and women, and supporting the efforts to eliminate racism in our country.

Why do you like being a Literacy Specialist?
I enjoy being a Literacy Specialist because it provides an opportunity to utilize my passion and training in a creative way. A large portion of my job entails helping assess students to determine their English reading, writing and speaking levels. I am privileged to meet many wonderful and brave new students with such eagerness and determination to improve their lives by becoming more fluent and confident in their English language skills. Similarly, I meet, train and provide guidance to our dedicated and talented volunteer tutors who are passionate about empowering others in the community.

What’s your specialty?
My specialty is pairing innovative, strategic methods with interesting content to help students learn and improve English for their daily lives. I also enjoy research of all kinds. I find great fulfillment, guiding both our students and tutors to find the right resources (both offline and online) to supplement English learning.

What are your personal likes and dislikes?
I love art, reading, cooking and thrift shopping. My favorite sweets are Pinkberry original tart yogurt and blueberries! I like checking out new places with a lot of nature. You can often find me hunting down ice cream shops wherever I go. My husband and I enjoy having our friends over at our house while we grilll in our backyard.

I don't like flying in airplanes or riding on boats and would rather ride in a car or walk instead. I prefer watching TV show series over watching movies. You can find me in coats and so many layers doing the winter because I don't handle cold weather very well.

Finally, one of my dreams is to build a spacious and functional treehouse in a backyard, similar to the ones that are built on the show "Treehouse Masters" on the Animal Planet channel.

You can change the life of an adult in your community by becoming a Reading Program tutor. Click here for more information or to register today.
