Ready, Set, Kindergarten!

Getting prepared for Kindergarten is something that parents often ask about at our libraries. It is so wonderful to tell them they are already working towards it by coming to our storytimes and programs! School readiness is what children need to know before they start school. First 5’s brochure: Are You Ready? A Family’s Guide to Starting Kindergarten is a great source for checklists, deadlines, and helpful tips.

Here are a few ways SCCLD libraries support kindergarten readiness for families with young children:

1000 Books Before Six
A fun and incentive based program that challenges children under 6 and their families to read 1000 books by the time they reach Kindergarten.

Offerings include baby, toddler, preschool, and family. Storytimes model listening and are grounded in the 5 early literacy practices: Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing, and Playing.

Read with Me Kits
Kits for check out that are designed around a certain theme, such as Dinosaurs, Numbers, Trains, or Colors. They include books, CD or DVD, puppet and activity suggestions.
