SCCLD Libraries Offer Free, On-Demand Video Streaming Service


SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. –September 21, 2017 –Kanopy, an on-demand streaming video service for libraries, has joined Santa Clara County Library District’s (SCCLD) growing list of free online Virtual Library services now available to cardholders. With free streaming of more than 30,000 popular films including selections from hundreds of producers such as The Criterion Collection, The Great Courses, PBS, Media Education Foundation and more, SCCLD cardholders have a plethora of video titles from which to choose. All that is needed is a valid email address, internet connection and SCCLD Library card.

“Watching a favorite movie or finding an intriguing documentary or foreign film has never been easier. We are pleased to offer Kanopy, a premier on-demand streaming video service that provides our library cardholders access to a unique collection of videos,” stated Nancy Howe, County Librarian. In addition to thousands of popular and entertaining films, Kanopy contains films of unique social and cultural value, as well as films often difficult or impossible to find elsewhere. “And the collection will continue to grow!” commented Nancy Howe. “Right now there are over 30,000 films available with hundreds of new titles added each month. We hope everyone will take advantage of this new free service.” The selection includes indie hits such as “2 Days in Paris”, classic masterpieces like “Day of the Dead” and “Bicycle Thieves,” and award-winning documentaries like “I Am Not Your Negro.” 

With a SCCLD library card and a valid email address, guests can access Kanopy from any computer or device with an internet connection, as well as through Roku and on apps for iOS and Android. After signing into Kanopy at sccl.kanopystreaming.com/, guests can search through the more than 100 different subject categories to find their next film. Each library cardholder receives 10 film credits good for 10 films per month. Credits reset at midnight on the first day of each month. Guests have 72 hours to watch each film.
