Cupertino Library Gains New Community Librarian

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. –April 27, 2017 – After an extensive national search, the Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new community librarian for the Cupertino Library in Cupertino, Calif. Over 30 candidates applied for this position with the final candidates completing an extremely competitive four stage application process that included oral boards and two rounds of interviews. During the nationwide search, specific qualities were looked for within the top applicants including: key leadership, management and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to support and promote the knowledge, ideas and cultural enrichment offered by the libraries. 
 
“Many exceptional and experienced librarians applied to become Community Librarian at the Santa Clara County Library District.  We are delighted to welcome, Clare Varesio, to our team,” stated Nancy Howe, County Librarian.
 
Varesio earned a master’s degree in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) from the University of California, Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.). Before her appointment as Community Librarian, Varesio served as Cupertino Library’s Children’s Supervising Librarian since 2012, and their Children’s Librarian since 2007. Instrumental in developing strategic partnerships with local schools that had previously been under served by their local library, Varesio also played a significant role in developing and increasing Cupertino library’s outreach programs through creative pop-up libraries and new service and integrated classroom instruction. In partnership with the Cupertino Library Foundation, Varesio helped develop the popular STEAM LEADS program. During her tenure working at the Cupertino Library, she served on SCCLD’s Social Media Action Committee, participated with the Family Reading Action Team and acted as a co-instructor for Infopeople’s Library Programs for School Readiness, providing her invaluable working knowledge of in-house programs. When asked how it felt in her new role, Varesio had this to say: “Cupertino Library has an amazing staff that serves an engaged and supportive community. Our library provides such important resources for our patrons, and I am pleased to continue at Cupertino Library in this new role.” Her new position as the Cupertino Community Librarian began January, 2017.

In 2016, the Santa Clara County Library District had more than 270,000 library cardholders and welcomed 3.3 million visitors who borrowed 9.1 million items.
