WiFi Troubleshooting

IMPORTANT: Before attempting any of the following steps, please ensure that your laptop’s physical WiFi switch is enabled. That may be indicated by any of the following WiFi symbols and could either be a plastic keyboard button or an LED light.

Library staff cannot assist you nor accept liability for handling of your equipment. The following Q&A is provided should you wish to troubleshoot a few common issues. Be aware that any changes you make may render your laptop incapable of connecting to its original network

Web-based email may be accessed, but SCCLD’s wireless network does not allow for email using POP, SMTP, IMAP, etc. In addition, the wireless network does not allow for Telnet, SSH, FTP, VPNs and other services beyond web access.

Follow these three basic troubleshooting steps to resolve the connection problem, and if you are still unable to connect to the internet, proceed to **.

  • Verify that your Wireless Card is enabled or turned on. You may need to restart your laptop.
  • Verify that you are connected to SSID, SCCL
  • Once you have verified that you are connected to the SCCL Wireless, open your Internet browser. If you are not connected, restart your Internet browser.

**I open my browser window but do not get a login screen.
Make sure your laptop is connected to SCCLD’s WIFI network as follows: XP:

  • To connect, right-click on the  WiFi icon on the bottom right of your laptop screen
  • Choose “View Available Wireless Networks.”
  • Highlight the “SCCL” network and click “Connect.”

Vista:

  • Right-click on the WiFi icon on the bottom right of your laptop screen.
  • Click “Connect to a Network” (you may have to refresh your screen to view available networks).
  • If not already connected, click on” SCCL” then click Connect.

Windows 7:

  • Click on the WiFi icon on the bottom right of your laptop screen.
  • Highlight the “SCCL” network then click “Connect.”

Apple:

  • Click the AirPort menu.
  • Choose “SCCL” from the list.

There is no wireless adapter available on my screen OR an X is displayed.
Your adapter may be disabled: 

XP:

  • Click the “Start” button and then choose “Run.”.
  • Type “ncpa.cpl” to access your network adapter properties and click OK.
  • Right-click on "Wireless Network Connection" and then click “Enable.”

Vista:

  • Press the “Start” button and in the Start Search field, type “ncpa.cpl” to access your network adapter properties then press “Enter.”
  • Right-click on the connection labeled "Wireless Network Connection" then click “Diagnose.”
  • If prompted, click on “Enable the network adapter Wireless Network Connection.” (A repairing process will begin.)
  • If your adapter does not connect automatically after it is enabled, click on “View available wireless networks” then highlight “SCCL.”
  • Click “Connect.”
  • Open your browser and log in as usual.

Windows 7:

  • Click the Start button then type “run” in “search programs and files” box and press Enter.
  • Type “ncpa.cpl” to access your network adapter properties then click “OK.”
  • Right-click on "Wireless Network Connection" then click “Enable.”

Apple:

  • Make sure that AirPort is on. The AirPort menu bar icon should be bold and should read “AirPort: On” at the top. If AirPort is off, turn it on from the AirPort menu.

My laptop still doesn't see the network. What else can I try?
Your laptop may not be configured to obtain an IP address automatically.

XP:

  • Press the “Start” button then click “Run.”
  • Type “ncpa.cpl” to access your network adapter properties then click “OK.”
  • Right-click on your wireless adapter then choose “Properties.”
  • Highlight “Internet Properties (TCP/IP)” and click the “Properties” button.
  • On the “General” tab, make sure both options which indicate "automatically" are selected.

IMPORTANT: If they are not and you choose to change this option, remember to change it back afterward so that you can continue to access your "normal network.”

Vista:

  • Press “Start” button and in the “Start Search” field, type “ncpa.cpl” to access your network adapter properties then press “Enter.”
  • Right-click on the connection labeled "Wireless Network Connection" then choose “Properties.”
  • Highlight “Internet Protocol” (if there are two, complete steps for each).
  • Click “Properties.”
  • Both settings should be set at “Obtain.... Automatically.”

IMPORTANT: If they are not and you choose to change this option, remember to change it back afterward so that you can continue to access your "normal network.” Windows 7:

  • Click the Start button then type “run” in the” search programs and files” box then press  “Enter.”
  • Type “ncpa.cpl” to access your network adapter properties then click “OK.”
  • Right-click on your wireless adapter then  choose “Properties.”
  • Highlight “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/Ipv4)” and click the “Properties” button
  • On the “General” tab, make sure both options which indicate "automatically" are selected.

IMPORTANT: If they are not and you choose to change this option, remember to change it back afterward so that you can continue to access your "normal network.” Apple:

  • If using Mac OS X, go to the Apple menu and click “System Preferences > Network.” Find the “TCP/IP” settings. Configure “IPv4” (should be using “DHCP”). Leave the “DNS Servers” and “Search Domains” boxes blank.

IMPORTANT: If they are not and you choose to change this option, remember to change it back afterward so that you can continue to access your "normal network.
