From Major Tom to Yoshimi: Sci-Fi as Music

Great science fiction isn't necessarily contained in a book. Many musicians over the years have written science fiction stories, sometimes in one song, sometimes over the course of an entire album. I couldn't possibly include all of them in one post, so I've limited myself to my favorites:

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Space Oddity by David Bowie
Bowie, man. What else can I say? These two are classics.

The Sophtware Slump and Sumday by Grandaddy
The theme of many of Grandaddy's songs is the juxtaposition between nature/humanity and technology. Also, the songs are really good.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips
An amazing album featuring two of my favorite Flaming Lips songs - the title track and Do You Realize??

OK Computer by Radiohead
So much has been written about OK Computer that I don't think I have much to add. It's simply one of the best records ever.
I'll leave you with an iconic interpretation of a classic sci-fi song:

Your Local Library Needs

Please see our Funding page for more information.

There is an important issue facing our libraries. As you may know, special taxpayer funding for local libraries has been in place for the past 20 years and helps our libraries to:

Buy needed books and up-to-date research materials

		Maintain children's reading programs

		Maintain library hours and services

		Keep qualified librarians

		Provide an award-winning bookmobile program

However, this funding is due to expire. Continuing this funding at existing rates will help to maintain and protect these important library services, with no increase in taxes.
To learn more about these issues, please review our Frequently Asked Questions.
Please contact County Librarian Nancy Howe at 408-293-2326 or nhowe@sccl.org with additional questions.

AADP Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Registration Drive at Cupertino Library

Perform a death-defying act on Sunday, May 19 at the Cupertino Community Hall. Cupertino Library and the Asian American Donor Program (AADP) will be holding a bone marrow and stem-cell registration drive from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Every new donor registered gives another patient hope for a compatible match at an earlier stage in their treatment. Financial donations are also welcome at the drive.
Be the one to save a life!
The AADP is dedicated to increasing the availability of potential stem cell donors for patients with life threatening diseases curable by a stem cell transplant. They started in 1989 to help Asian American leukemia patients find compatible bone marrow matches. As they’ve grown, they’ve also widened their scope to find matches for as many people as possible. If you would like to learn more about them and the work they do, you can find their webpage here.
The AADP’s logo is an origami crane to honor the memory of one of the most famous leukemia patients, Sadako Sasaki. Although Sadako died before she could complete her 1,000 cranes, others completed them in her memory in the hopes that other leukemia patients would live.

When a carefully worded listing appears for a governess to assist with a "delicate situation"--a child born during the Great War--Jane is certain the child is fey-cursed, and that she can help. Teaching the unruly Dorie to suppress her curse is hard enough; she certainly didn't expect to fall for the girl's father, the enigmatic artist Edward Rochart. But her blossoming crush is stifled by her scars and by his parade of women. Ugly women, who enter his closed studio...and come out as beautiful as the fey. Jane knows Rochart cannot love her, just as she knows that she must wear iron for the rest of her life. But what if neither of these things are true? Step by step Jane unlocks the secrets of a new life--and discovers just how far she will go to become whole again

The Killing Moon by N.K. Jemisin
In the ancient city-state of Gujaareh, peace is the only law. Upon its rooftops and amongst the shadows of its cobbled streets wait the Gatherers - the keepers of this peace. Priests of the dream-goddess, their duty is to harvest the magic of the sleeping mind and use it to heal, soothe . . . and kill those judged corrupt.

But when a conspiracy blooms within Gujaareh's great temple, Ehiru - the most famous of the city's Gatherers - must question everything he knows. Someone, or something, is murdering dreamers in the goddess' name, stalking its prey both in Gujaareh's alleys and the realm of dreams. Ehiru must now protect the woman he was sent to kill - or watch the city be devoured by war and forbidden magic.
