Celebrate James Gandolfini

Just as I was about to post a blog entry on vegetables, I heard the news that actor James Gandolfini passed away today while in Europe (ironically in Italy). Best known as Tony Soprano from the television show The Sopranos, he was also respected for his acting in a number of other roles - usually playing a tough guy, sometimes with a "heart of gold" and sometimes without. As a fan of his work myself, I thought this would be a good time to honor his memory. If you're not familiar with him, check out a few of these videos from our branch libraries:

The Sopranos

The Sopranos

Tony Soprano is your average, middle-aged businessman. Tony's got a dutiful wife, a not-so-dutiful daughter, a son named Anthony Jr., a mother he's trying to coax into a retirement home, a hot-headed uncle, a not-too-secret mistress, and a shrink to tell all his secrets, except the one she already knows: Tony's a mob boss.

Lonely Hearts

Lonely Hearts

Based on a true story. In the late 1940's, Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez became known as the notorious "Lonely Hearts Killers". They would swindle and then viciously murder war widows who would answer their personal ads.

Gandolfini plays Detective Charles Hilderbrandt, who along with his partner, is obsessed with catching the killer.

Get Shorty

Get Shorty

John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, and Rene Russo star in this mobster-turned-Hollywood film, which follows Chili Palmer (Travolta) as he travels from Miami to Hollywood to collect a debt, but ends up getting bitten by the movie-making bug. Gandolfini stars as "Bear" the stuntman and "bad guy" sidekick, in a small but entertaining role.

The Man Who Wasn't There

The Man Who Wasn't There

In a sleepy Northern California town in the 1940s, Ed Crane, a humble barber, suspects that his wife Doris is having an affair with her boss. When a stranger comes into town hinting that there is a fortune to be made in investing in the new invention of dry cleaning, Ed hatches a blackmail scheme he hopes will make him rich and get him some revenge at the same time. His plan goes horribly awry when he accidentally commits a murder for which Doris is blamed, landing her in jail, and Ed at the mercy of big-city lawyer Freddy Riedenschneider.

Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are

Max has an active imagination, who will throw a fit if others don't go along with what he wants. Following an incident with his sister Claire and her friends, Max throws a tantrum when his mother pays more attention to her boyfriend than to him - runs away from home. Wearing his wolf costume at the time, Max not only runs away physically, but runs toward a world in his imagination. Book adaptation.

(Gandolfini voices the role of Carol, one of the "wild things")
