So many of us are glued to our devices. If it's not a mobile phone, it's a tablet, ereader or computer. This is especially the case for children under the age of 18. According to MedLinePlus.gov, most children 8 to 18 years of age spend 5 to 7 hours of screen time a day. Screen time is any time that is spent in front of a screen, such as a TV, computer, or video game player. It’s a sedentary activity that can lead to:
weight problems, even obesity
problems with anxiety, depression and paying attention
Fifty percent of children younger than 8 have access to a mobile device like a smartphone, an MP3 player, or a tablet. To decrease your child’s screen time, MedLinePlus suggests doing other activities. Easier said than done in Silicon Valley, the land of all things digital. Never fear, the library is here!
To entice your kids away from the screen, check out Saratoga Library’s Calendar for our weekly storytimes and children’s programs. On November 19th at 7:30 pm, we have a program planned that will be a hands-on educational presentation on reptiles called For Goodness Snakes.
