Watch Out For Sally Hawkins

Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine

Cate Blanchett has been justifiably drawing raves and Oscar buzz for her stunning performance in Woody Allen's film Blue Jasmine.  However, there is one other Oscar worthy performance from an actress who might be less familiar to most people.

English actress, Sally Hawkins turns in a natural and winning performance as Jasmine's sister Ginger, whose natural warmth and generosity contrast with Jasmine's upper class affectations. There is something in Hawkins' work, a resilience and delicacy, that reminds me of Mia Farrow's performance in Allen's 1985 film, Purple Rose of Cairo.

Sally Hawkins is an incredible actor on the rise.  Check out her wide ranging and quirky talent in these movies.

Acclaimed British director Mike Leigh's comedy-drama about an eternally optimistic pre-school teacher named Poppy whose high spirits are put to the test by her incredibly gloomy driving instructor. Sally Hawkins won praise as well as a Golden Globe and many critics awards for the film.  Her performance avoids one note cheerfulness and skillfully finds the depth to the character.

A true story shot in a docu-drama style.  Hawkins plays an ordinary mother who takes on Ford Motors to secure equal pay for the women who work at the local assembly plant.  An intelligent rabble rousing film that feels somewhat like a British Norma Rae.

Hawkins plays the romantically frustrated Anne Elliot in a quiet manner that suggests a steely strength underneath.  This 2007 Masterpiece Theater version of the Jane Austen classic novel is sumptuous and satisfying on all levels.

Sally Hawkins plays an orphan named Sue, who grows up as an accomplished thief or fingersmith.  Sue is recruited as part of a scheme to steal a fortune from an heiress. After that, the plot thickens as Sue finds herself drawn to the heiress romantically.  This BBC adaptation faithfully follows the enjoyable twists and turns of Sarah Waters' novel.
