Kazu Kibuishi: The Artist Behind the New Harry Potter Covers

To mark the occasion of the Harry Potter series' 15th Anniversary, Scholastic created new covers for the books, replacing the original covers by Mary Grandpre.  The artist they chose was graphic novel author/illustrator Kazu Kibuishi.

Kazu Kibuishi

Kibuishi was born in Japan and came to the USA as a child with his mother.

As an adult, he wowed readers with his work on the graphic novel series Flight and Amulet.  His art shows influences from both Japanese and American styles of illustration. Some people have compared him to the great animator Hayao Miyazaki.

The Harry Potter assignment has brought his work to a whole new audience of fans.

You can see a book by book comparison between Grandpre's and Kibuishi's covers here

In addition to the series I mentioned earlier, you can check out these Kibuishi titles.

Daisy Kutter

Daisy Kutter: The Last Train

Kibuishi opens up his art to an expansive wild, wild West environment for Daisy Kutter.  Daisy thinks her bandit days are behind her but when she loses her store in a poker game, she finds herself turning back to her former ways.

A boy and his dog.  This series started out as a webcomic for Kibuishi.  Kibuishi experiments with different comic layouts throughout this series of comics.  You never know what's coming next!  The book finishes up with a section showing how Kibuishi creats a "Copper" comic.
