The world of jazz lost one of its legends today. Dave Brubeck was a pioneer of jazz. With his classic album "Time Out" he introduced us to jazz at a new tempo. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" was in 9/8 time, 9 beats to the measure instead of the customary 2, 4, or 5 beats. "Take Five," which became a hit on the Billboard charts, was recorded in 5/4 time and instantly became his signature song.
Mr. Brubeck enjoyed testing the boundaries of rhythm and challenging himself to come up with more and more exciting tunes that tested what was then the standard of music.
He was born in Concord California, attending Mills College in Oakland before joining the military. At the age of 88, he was still touring the country and delighting audiences with his music. Mr. Brubeck would have been 92 on December 6th.
Here are some of Dave Brubeck's titles available at the Santa Clara County Library District. Put some Dave Brubeck on and re-discover, or introduce yourself, to a legend of Jazz.
