Q: What do skating and cooking have in common?
A: Brian Boitano loves to do both.
I know that when I think of Olympic skaters, I think of extremely fit athletes on rigorously healthy diets whose focus is on competing, not eating. I don’t generally picture them hosting cooking shows on television any more than I’d expect to see Chef Emeril Lagasse land a triple axel on Olympic ice.
Mention Brian Boitano and most people will probably put him in the athlete category first. However, after having won the men's figure skating gold medal in 1988, Brian Boitano has proved he is a multi-talented man. He has successfully added a second career to his resume as the host of What Would Brian Boitano Make? on the Cooking Channel. The show originally premiered on the Food Network in 2009. His first cookbook, What Would Brian Boitano Make? is a companion to his show, published in May 2013.
According to Brian, cooking and skating have this much in common; both are a means of great personal expression, and both skills require years of concentration and practice to truly master them. Come to the Cupertino Community Hall on Saturday, August 24th at 2 pm to hear Brian talk about his adventures while competing as a skater and dining as a cook around the world.
