National Aviation Day 2013

August 19th is National Aviation Day, a federal observance to celebrate the history and development of aviation.  It was established by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939 to honor the 68th anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday.

Here is a selection of aviation books to help you celebrate this special day:

My Brothers' Flying Machine

My Brothers' Flying Machine by Jane Yolen

Katherine, Wilbur and Orville Wright's younger sister, tells her point of view of her brothers' lives and inventions.

Flight by Andrew Nahum

A pictorial history of flight, information on how a variety of flying machines operate, and information on the principles of flight.

A Is for Airplane

A Is for Airplane by Mary Ann McCabe Riehle

This wonderful alphabet book introduces you to the extremely awesome world of aviation.  It talks about everything from the Wright Brothers to breaking the sound barrier.

The Little Airplane

The Little Airplane by Lois Lenski

Pilot Small flies a small propeller-driven airplane.  He does loops and turns and even makes an emergency landing.  The landscapes pictured reflects what it was like to fly in the 1930s.  Lenski's artwork with its bold forms and classic simplicity is still delightful even after 75 years.
