Reading "Girl With A Pearl Earring" at Cupertino Library

This month the Cupertino Library Adult Book Discussion group will discuss their July selection, Tracy Chevalier’s historical novel, Girl With a Pearl Earring (2000).  Not even art historians know for sure who the great Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer, used as his model for this famous painting.  As a novelist though, Tracy Chevalier can venture where historians fear to tread.  In Girl with a Pearl Earring, she presents her candidate, Griet, who joins the Vermeer household as a housemaid at age 16. One of Griet's duties is to keep Vermeer’s studio clean. Gradually, the discreet, capable girl makes herself indispensable to the painter, culminating in her becoming his model for the eponymous painting.

The Adult Book Discussion Group meets on the third Thursday evening of each month in the Cupertino Library Story Room at 7pm. Adults of all ages are welcome.  All meetings are sponsored by the Friends of the Cupertino Library.

The next meeting will be on Thursday August 15, and the selected title will be F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby.
