Master Gardeners: Beneath the Soil

Gardeners always enjoy seeing their flowers, fruits and vegetables grow above ground.

But….what’s going on in your garden at the root level and below? "Will trade nutrients  for food," sums up the interactions between microorganisms and plants. According to Master Gardener Marianne Mueller, healthy garden soil is a “teeming city” of microorganisms all working hard to nourish your plants in exchange for the food and oxygen the plants contribute through photosyntesis.  For your plants to flourish above ground, this underground soil food web also needs to thrive. For this to happen, we need to nurture the soil so that it can nurture our plants in a constant cycle.

Come to the Cupertino Community Hall on Wednesday, July 10th at 7pm to find out more about the subterranean part of your garden. Marianne will teach participants how to improve the quality of their garden soil through the techniques of composting, vermiculture, mulching, and the  judicious use of fertilizers.
