Green Teen Garden Project - Sprouting Seeds!

Just the mention of the month of March conjures up thoughts of shamrocks and the color green; but, here at the Cupertino Library, our teen volunteers took March’s green theme to a whole new level.

This week the Green Teen Garden Project saw it’s volunteers emphasize their vow to Go Green by creating recycled seed sprouters out of used 2-liter soda bottles. After washing and cleaning out the bottles, the teens cut the individual containers in half. Next, they used a hold-punch to puncture several holes in the top half of the bottle, then flipped it upside down and added 3 cups of potting soil to it. 2 cups of water was then added to the bottom portion of the bottle before inserting the soil filled top half. The water will now be able to seep upwards through nozzle of the bottle into the soil to help it continually stay moist and irrigated. A pencil eraser was used to poke ½” holes in the soil where a variety of vegetable seeds including cucumber, carrots and lettuce seeds were placed. The teens watered the soil to help it settle into place.  Teens will monitor the water levels to make sure it gets filled when running low. All this, and in a few short weeks you will have sprouts that will be ready to transplant into the ground!

PLUS, DON'T MISS OUT ON MAKING YOUR OWN SEED SPROUTER, HERE, AT THE CUPERTINO LIBRARY ON SATURDAY, APRIL 20TH AT 2PM IN THE STORYTIME ROOM. ALL MATERIALS WILL BE PROVIDED!!!!!
