Affordable Care Act Part 1: Introduction

The Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010.  The Supreme Court rendered a final decision to uphold the health care law On June 28, 2012.  Under the law,   U.S. citizens and legal residents are required to have health insurance. In addition, a new “Patient’s Bill of Rights” gives the American people the stability and flexibility they need to make informed choices about their health.

Starting October 1, 2013, people can shop the health plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace.  The Marketplace is a new way to find health coverage that fits different budgets and health needs.
Although all insurance plans are offered by private companies, the marketplace is either run by the state or the federal government.   For additional information, individuals can call the national marketplace, toll-free:  1-800-318-2596.  Information is provided in English and Spanish, as well as in another 150 languages.
