Running for Health

photo of running What is on your New Year’s resolution list?  Whether you have a short list, or a long one, being healthy should right on top.

Exercise is considered essential in keeping physically and psychologically healthy. Some proven benefits include reducing stress, boosting energy, controlling weight, promoting sleeping quality, and alleviating the discomfort of degenerative and chronic disease.

Running is a common exercise that many people enjoy. The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine provides the following simple safety tips for runners to avoid sports injury.

1.     Have at least a five-minute stretching warm up before running.

2.     Replace the running shoes after 500-600 miles run.

3.     Run on flat, resilient surface instead of the concrete or rough road.

4.     Dress in layers and avoid dehydration by drinking one pint of water for every pound

of weight lost.

More information about safe running is available on the website of American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.  In addition, you can read the article about selecting athletic shoes from The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Our library has also subscribed to a special magazine named Runner’s World, which is a monthly periodical devoted to discussions on health and fitness topics for runners of all levels.

You can borrow the print copy or access the electronic version from MasterFile Premier  magazine/newspaper database.   More books on running are available in our online catalog
