Grimm Tales

This month will see the release of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, yet another film in a string of recent movie adaptations and television series that transform the lives and tales of The Brothers Grimm into crime-fighters and detectives. Along with movies like The Brothers Grimm and television series like Grimm and Once Upon a Time, books have also been getting into the fairy-tale fighting action; read on for a list of titles.

The Annotated Brothers Grimm

The Annotated Brothers Grimm

Before you dive into the modern adaptations and sequels, read the original stories and judge for yourself how the modern versions stack up. I am a big fan of The Annotated Series, which is full of background history, images, and biographical material. This version of the fairy tales will allow you to delve deeper into the tales you only thought you knew.

 The Grimm Legacy

The Grimm Legacy -Polly Shulman

Elizabeth is a librarian for a special collections library of a very unusual nature. The Grimm Collection is a room full of magical objects upon which the Grimm fairy tales were based. A table that conjures up a delicious feast, boots that allow the wearer to cross entire fields, even the infamous magic mirror. It is Elizabeth’s task to keep track of these items and make sure that they do not fall into the wrong hands. But when the items go missing, she must embark on a quest of her own to recover the stolen artifacts.

 The Fairy-tale Detectives

The Fairy-tale Detectives -Michael Buckley

When Sabrina and Daphne discover that they are the direct descendants of the Brothers Grimm, their lives are turned upside down. It turns out that the fairy tales are not just works of fiction, rather they are case files from the brothers’ adventures fighting the misuse and dangerous use of magic. Now, the sisters must take up the family legacy and learn to track and fight the creatures they once believed were mere stories.

The Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm -Jack Zipes

What is it about the Brothers Grimm that makes modern readers want to view them as adventurers and heroes? Were they simply authors penning children's stories, or were they wanderers, transforming real-life events into fairy tales? This non-fiction title seeks to explore the romantic image we have of Jacob and Wilhelm and uncover the line between fact and fiction in the lives and tales of The Brothers Grimm.
