Sometimes I'm not in the mood for taking on a long book, film, or CD, or, I want the satisfaction of finishing something in one day. Here are some of my picks for when I have a case of the short attention span blues.
Is This It (CD) by the Strokes The Strokes debut album and, at 35:34, it contains no filler. It has been named by several publications as one the best albums of the 00's. |
Pastoralia by George Saunders A collection of stories that originally ran in The New Yorker. The stories are set in a dystopian near future where the characters are the "have nots" in a world where capitalism has run amok. Surprisingly wacky and touching, these are characters you won't soon forget. |
La Jetée (DVD) La Jetée is a science fiction film with influence beyond its 28 minutes in length. Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys was directly influenced by this film and Time Magazine ranked it number 1 in their list of "Top 10 Time-Travel Movies". |
Timeless Classics (Audio book) A collection of some of the best examples of the short story genre on audio book. If you like these, you can check out the series here. |
Un chien andalou (DVD) This surrealist silent film is a collaboration between Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel. This film has been unsettling people since its release in 1929 and, at only 16 minutes, it is a brief trip into weirdness. |

Pink Moon (CD) Singer/Songwriter, Nick Drake's third and final album. It was recorded at midnight over two nights, with some songs being recorded in only one take. It is a beautiful, compelling album and it is only a little over 28 minutes. |
The bakery girl of Monceau (DVD) The first film of Eric Rohmer's series "Six Moral Tales", it has a non-intimidating length of 23 minutes, and is a meet-cute for the intellectual set. |
