2013 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Music Festival - FREE in Golden Gate Park, October 4-6
The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (HSB) music festival is a yearly, free event held in Golden Gate Park the first weekend of October and features class-acts in Bluegrass, Rock, Folk and Country music. The festival began in 2001 and was conceived and subsidized by SF venture capitalist Warren Hellman, a musician and music fan who wanted to give the people of the Bay Area the gift of a free, non-commercialized music experience. Sadly, Warren Hellman passed away in 2011 but in keeping with his vision and love of music, he left behind an endowment that will fully fund the festival for the next 15 years.
HSB is a one-of-a-kind experience and draws huge crowds, usually 500,000+ over its three day annual run. It's also BYO and while there are food vendors there, the festival encourages attendees to arrive with blankets, chairs, and picnic fixings. Also, the festival sells no alcohol but drinking is allowed if you bring your own. The festival is also dog and family friendly so pack everything and everyone up and have some fun! HSB's relaxed, carefree, and inclusive atmosphere is truly a unique experience for the music fan in all of us! Be sure to check out complete festival information and the full lineup here: http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/2013/
Finally, in honor of Warren Hellman and this year's festival being held October 4-6 in Golden Gate Park, have a listen to my favorite albums from some of this year's featured lineup. You can find them in the SCCLD collection!
