This picture was taken on my last trip to Belgium and the Netherlands. My very favorite museum is the The Mauritshuis in The Hague, where the collection lines the walls of a magnificent palace fit to display this impeccable collection of Flemish and Dutch art. With only 36 known paintings by Vermeer in the world, seeing the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring was a moment to cherish.
Thanks to a renovation, the Mauritshuis has loaned some of its extraordinary collection, including Girl with a Pearl Earring, to the De Young Museum in San Francisco now through June 2, 2013.
You can prepare for your visit by checking out some of these items from the Library or attending a free illustrated evening lecture on either February 6 or February 13, by Kay Payne at the Los Altos Library.
