Newbery Books are for Grown-Ups too

Posted on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 by readingprogram

Newbery Books are perfect reads for advanced literacy students and ESL learners; most of these books are written at fifth-grade to eighth-grade levels, so they are perfect for building comprehension skills and reading for pleasure. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most notable American children's book published the previous year. The purpose of the Newbery Medal was stated as follows:

  • "To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children.
  • To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels.
  • To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field."

Students may also enjoy listening to these books while following along with the text, so be sure to look for audio books and ebooks in the collection too! Enjoy these selected Newbery Books. And if you love my selections, then be sure to review the complete list of Newbery Books!
