Each One Teach One is an old proverb which originated in the United States during slavery. Most Africans were denied access to formal education so their reading skills were very, very limited. When a slave learned or was taught to read, it became his or her responsibility to teach someone else. This effort fashioned the phrase "each one teach one," and modern-day literacy programs embrace this model daily by pairing generous volunteer tutors with students for free one-on-one instruction.
Forty-two Reading Program students are currently waiting for their ONE! These eager individuals want to improve their reading and comprehension skills to be able to get better jobs, help their children with their homework, or read with pleasure. Students meet individually with their tutors at any of the Santa Clara County District Libraries; currently many students are waiting for instruction at Campbell, Cupertino, Milpitas and Saratoga Libraries.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you can attend an upcoming orientation to learn more about the program. Volunteer orientation will be held on Tuesday, July 23 from 2:00-3:00 and 6:00-7:00 at The Milpitas Library. Please register by calling 408-262-1349 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
