Cyber Monday, the online retail world's version of Black Friday, started in 2005. Taking place the Monday after Thanksgiving, it is the busiest online shopping day of the year. Consequently, it also has the greatest instances of fradulent transactions and identity theft. How can you take advantage of the awesome sales while keeping your information and bank account safe?
Make sure you studiously apply the basic rules of online shopping:
Shop with well-known, reputable sites only.
Watch out for unknown or less-reputable sites offering deals that seem too good to be true - they probably are.
Closely monitor the activity on your card(s) and immediately report any fraudulent activity.
For those of us who hate the mall, online shopping is a godsend. However, if not done carefully, it can be more of a headache than long lines and screaming toddlers waiting to see Santa. So be smart, be safe, and save money on Cyber Monday!
