Fall is always an exciting time for new books. This year two of my favorite authors, Michael Chabon and Barbara Kingsolver, have new titles coming out and I am so excited! But wait...there's more! I loved Ken Follett's Fall of Giants and have been eagerly awaiting the sequel for two long years. My patience will finally be rewarded this September. Get on the request lists now; these titles are sure to be popular!
Though he has never (in my opinion) lived up to the genius displayed in the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, I still love Michael Chabon's work. His newest, centering on an independent record store in his hometown of Berkeley, is already garnering rave reviews. Booklist describes it as a "magnificently crafted, exuberantly alive, emotionally lustrous, and socially intricate saga."
Ever since I was blown away by The Poisonwood Bible, I have been an avid fan of Barbara Kingsolver. She has yet to disappoint, and if the reviews are accurate, she stays true to form with Flight Behavior. As always, she infuses her absorbing fiction with social activism that conveys an important message without detracting from the story.
Set in the era of the First World War, Fall of Giants is my favorite kind of book - long (nearly 1000 pages!), historical, and chock-full of fascinating characters. Winter of the World is set a generation later, following the children of the characters as the world braces for another devastating war. The reviews assure me that this sequel (second in a planned trilogy) is just as absorbing as its predecessor.
