I saw it for the first time recently and was totally amazed, I can't believe I had never even heard of this film before I found it on the shelf. Now I feel I must tell everyone about it!
As described on the back cover: "Set 80,000 years ago, this accomplished cinematic spectacle follows the lives of four tribes of early man - each with their own customs and stages of development. As they all face perilous terrain, human rivals and savage predators, one peaceful tribe searches for the element that will bring comfort and safety to all of mankind: fire. While celebrating human drama, this stunning film, shot on location in Scotland, Iceland, Canada and Kenya, also offers fascinating insights into prehistoric man's survival."
The film feels very authentic, it won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and employed several experts in anthropology and linguistics as consultants. It also won the Cesar Award for Best Film and Best Director.
I felt a little bad for Ron Perlman, I thought he was probably cast because his unique face does look a little Neanderthalish, but no way, his acting was top notch in this film. The cast was great, Rae Dawn Chong (from Beat Street, the best breakdancing movie ever made) appears as well and won a Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
Quest for Fire is a must see! The library also has plenty of Rae Dawn n' Ron's other films and TV shows.
