California grown: the benefit (and fun!) of creating your own edible garden!

There are few things more delicious than freshly grown produce. From incredibly crisp lettuce to tree-ripened apricots to moist, crunchy carrots...enjoying a mouthful of flavor straight from the ground is enchanting!
So why is it that so many of us eat produce that has been shipped for weeks from around the world and has lost most of the luster it had when it was freshly harvested? Why not establish your own edible garden right in your yard, on your porch, in your kitchen, or on the balcony of your apartment?
Think that's easier said than done? Well think again! The Santa Clara County Library has lots of resources to get you on the road to deliciously fresh and homegrown produce! For example, in the new book, California Fruit & Vegetable Gardening, author and Alameda resident Claire Splan explains step-by-step how to plant, grow, and eat the best edible plants for California gardens.
One of the best part of Splan's book is the section entitled "Nine Reasons Why You Should Grow Your Own." The author promises that growing your own food will help you understand what "fresh" truly means, ensure that you know exactly what you're eating, help you save money, get a healthy workout, and teach your kids, friends and neighbors the benefits of gardening as well! The book also includes instructions on getting started and growing information for more than 60 edible plants!
