Eye Exams and Why They Are So Important

An eye exam can reveal more than whether or not you need glasses. Some critical health issues, which may have no symptoms until well advanced, can be discovered by your doctor. These include:                                                

  • Type 2 diabetes                                                        diagram of eye
  • Brain tumors
  • Cancer of the eye                                    
  • High blood pressure
  • Certain vascular diseases        

  How often should you have your eyes tested?

  •   0-6 months  --  at least once by an opthalmologist or pediatrician
  •   6 months - 18 years  --  every 2-4 years
  •   19 - 39  --  every 3-5 years
  •   40 - 64  --  every 2-4 years
  •   65 or older --  every 1-2 years

If you have a health condition, your eye doctor may suggest more frequent eye examinations.


Your eye doctor will also be able to test your eyes for:color blindness test

  •   General eye health                          
  •   Color-blindness
  •   Depth perception                                           
  •   Field of vision
  •   Nearsightedness
  •   Farsightedness
  •   Astigmatism
  •   Presbyopia
  •   How the eyes work together
