The Healing Power of Nutrition

Posted on Friday, February 15, 2013 by Health_and_Fitness

How many times a day are we bombarded with advertisements about this supplement or that vegetable that is the miracle cure for something that ails us? From fruit juice to protein powder to mineral tablets, the nutrition industry is full of companies that claim to have the answer to your chronic health problem. But how do we know what is real and what is not?

Like with any health concern, it is always best to consult your physician first if you’re thinking about starting a new diet or health regimen. If you’re looking to do a little research on your own, however, the Santa Clara County Library District has lots of great resources to help you wade through the sea of the nutrition industry’s miracle cures.

Nutrient Power Nutrient Power

Published in August of 2012, Nutrient Power, written by William J. Walsh, PhD, presents loads of scientific information on how food can be used to help treat mental illness. From depression to ADHD to Alzheimer’s disease, this book explains how certain nutritional deficiencies or excesses can contribute to the onset of mental illness, and goes on to describe how to help stop these conditions in their tracks. Full of interesting research, this book is a must read if you’re interested in learning more about the science of nutrition and biochemistry.

The Anti-anxiety Food Solution The Anti-anxiety Food Solution

Written by local author Trudy Scott, CN, The Antianxiety Food Solution is another book that demonstrates a more practical approach to discovering how the foods you eat impact your emotions and mood. Providing lifestyle tips and simple changes that can help improve your health in general, this is another good pick if you want to find out more about how nutrition influences your well-being. Trudy Scott will be visiting the Morgan Hill Library on April 20, 2013 at 4:00 PM so be sure to attend if you want to hear more about this topic straight from the source.

Several books in our library system also relate to specific conditions, such as cancer and diabetes. Take a look at

What to Eat If You Have Diabetes What to Eat If You Have Diabetes

What to Eat If You Have Cancer What to Eat If You Have Cancer

Foods to Fight Cancer by Richard Béliveau. All three of these titles have advice on battling these chronic conditions with food and provide insight into additional treatments available besides what you get at the pharmacy.
