Bad breath – and what to do about it

Bad breath, or halitosis, is one of those conditions we’d all like to avoid.  What causes bad breath, anyway?

There are several contributing  factors:

  • Smoking – In addition to increasing your chances of heart attack, stroke, and a whole slew of other really nasty diseases, smoking causes bad breath.
  • What we eat – When the bacteria in our mouths decompose food particles, evil smelling odors may result.  This is especially true when we eat foods such as raw onions, garlic, anchovies, fish, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and curry.
  • What we think and how we react – Stress can exacerbate bad breath.  In fact, it seems to be a factor in most cases of halitosis.

Factors such as hormones, time of the day, age, physical condition and dentures can all be part of the problem.

So, what can we do about this?

  • Brush and floss, and get regular dental checkups.
  • Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless lozenges to increase saliva flow.  This is the body’s natural mouthwash.  Be sure to pick the sugarless kinds.
  • Drink 8 glasses of water a day to keep the mouth hydrated.

Your dentist may have more suggestions for how to deal with halitosis.  The SCCLD libraries also have books on this subject.
