From Russell Freedman, the author of the Newbery Award winning book Lincoln – A Photobiography, comes another wonderful book that brings history and historical figures to life in a way that makes readers even more curious about them: Abraham Lincoln & Frederick Douglass – The Story Behind an American Friendship.
An unlikely friendship developed between President Abraham Lincoln and activist Frederick Douglass. It was surprising how different and yet the same these two men were during a critical period of American history, when the Civil War was raging and slaves were trying to win their freedom and equality. Both men were self-educated, born into poverty and, through tremendous effort and hard work, reached great success.
I particularly enjoyed this book because it made a turbulent time, and the men who lived in it, come alive for me with clear, interesting text and fascinating photos.
