The announcement of the 2014 Grammy Award nominations contained a lot of surprises.  Many music fans were expecting the music industry to recognize popular efforts by Justin Timberlake and Kanye West with Album of the Year nominations. The surprises reveal a competitive and deep field of nominees.

Nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Brave".

Nominated for Album of the Year and Record of the Year for "Get Lucky." Also for Dance/Electronica Album, Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Get Lucky" and Best Engineered non-classical Album.

Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City

Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City by Kendrick Lamar

Nominated for Album of the Year and Best New Artist. Also for Rap Album, Rap Performance for "Swimming Pools (Drank)", Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Now or Never", Rap Song for "F***in' Problems."

The Heist

The Heist by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Nominated for Album of the Year, Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Same Love." Also for Rap Album Rap Performance and Rap Song for "Thrift Shop."

Red

Red by Taylor Swift

Nominated for Album of the Year. Also for Country Album, Country Song for "Begin Again."

The Grammys will be awarded in two ceremonies on January 26, 2014.  The awards to different genres of music will be given in a pre-telecast ceremony.  This will be followed by the broadcast of the main ceremony where awards are announced in the four "General" categories: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.
