Charming Homage or Blasphemous Desecration?

Scene from Tom and Jerry in the Wizard of Oz

With this weekend's release of Oz, the Great and Powerful, I started thinking about the most bizarre Oz tie-in, I've ever experienced.

If the idea of the cartoon characters Tom and Jerry cutting capers while Dorothy Gale croons out "Over the Rainbow" gives you pause, you should definitely avoid this 2011 direct to video mash up of the creations of L. Frank Baum, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera

If you are intrigued to see how the Oscar winning cartoon duo from 1940 would be integrated into the classic 1939 musical, you should definitely check out Tom and Jerry & the Wizard of Oz.

What intrigues me about this release is that despite its direct to video origins, the creators actually go to the trouble of recreating the look of the original film, often completely reproducing the exact composition and dialogue of certain scenes.  The movie manages to also pay homage to Tom and Jerry's old cartoons, with variations of their original routines mixed into the classic tale. While the film gives Tom and Jerry their own unique Oz adventures, they manage to return to Dorothy's original story in interesting ways and all within an hour's running time.

Ultimately, even though this unlikely combination of characters kind of shocked me, I finally came to appreciate the affection for both the Oz and the Tom and Jerry characters shown throughout.  It is definitely worth looking up.

In observance of all things Oz related, here are some other walks down the yellow brick road, related movies, books and music you might enjoy.
