Countdown to the 2013 Academy Awards: Eiko Ishioka

Eiko Ishioka's posthumous Academy Award nomination for designing the costumes in Mirror, Mirror capped off the career of one of the boldest multi-media designers in the world.

Ishioka began working for the cosmetic giant Shiseido after being one of the few women to graduate with a degree in design in 1961.  Once she opened her own design firm in the 1970's, her avant garde designs attracted international attention.  She started working in films with director Paul Schrader's Mishima: A Life in Four Parts (1985).  She went on to work in several more films, designed parts of the Beijing 2008 Olympics , directed music videos and even designed the costumes for the Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark musical.
