Sam Raimi has been making big movie news in 2013.  First, for directing Oz, The Great and Powerful and now, again topping the box office, by producing the big budget remake of his 1982 horror film The Evil Dead.  Newcomer Fede Alvarez directed the 2013 version of Sam Raimi's cult classic.

If you're a horror fan wanting to get caught up with Sam Raimi's influential Evil Dead trilogy, the SCCLD system has all three films available!

The original The Evil Dead revolves around a deserted cabin, five unsuspecting people and a book of evil that unleashes a force which posesses and destroys most of the characters.  The film was notable for its surprising humor and its intensely gory special effects.

The original not only inspired the 2013 remake but Sam Raimi directed a full trilogy. It also partially inspired Josh Whedon's horror tribute The Cabin in the Woods.

Bruce Campbell returns as Ashley "Ash" Williams for the second Evil Dead II Evil Dead II (1987) which is almost a remake of the first film as a super-kinetic horror comedy.  The film almost instantly careens from sight gags to gruesome dismemberments to stop motion animation. It also starts a pattern of Ash's hilarious one line reactions to the horror around him. I've never seen anything like it and it has its own unique place as a horror film.

The third film in the trilogy,  Army of Darkness (1992) actually leaves the cabin behind and is more of an action comedy with horror elements.  The film involves time warps, medieval England and epic battles against the titular army.  It has a lot of fun moments and provides many quotable lines from Bruce Campbell's Ash, but it lacks the intensity of the first two films.
