Reading "The Optimist's Daughter" at Cupertino Library

Posted on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 by Cupertino_Library

This month, the Cupertino Library Adult Book Discussion group will talk about The Optimist’s Daughter by Eudora Welty.  Laurel McKelva Hand, a middle-aged widow, returns to Mississippi to see her father who is undergoing minor eye surgery when he “sneaks out on them.” In the days following his death Laurel settles his affairs and deals with her self-centered step-mother. In the process, she must confront her memories and in so doing, she comes to a better understanding of both of her parents and her own short-lived marriage.
The Adult book group meets on the third Thursday evening of each month at 7 pm. in the Library Story Room. Adults of all ages are welcome to attend. All meetings are sponsored by The Friends of the Cupertino Library.
The January book will be Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan.  This is a 2014 Silicon Valley Reads selected title. The meeting will be held on Thursday January 16 at 7 pm.
