Cupertino Fall Performing Arts and Culture: Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra

Posted on Thursday, December 12, 2013 by Cupertino_Library

All good things must come to an end, alas.  Including the Cupertino Library 2013 Fall Performing Arts and Culture Series.  This year, the Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra has the honor of concluding our  musical and dramatic performances at the Cupertino Community Hall.  Please join us this Saturday, December 14, at 2 pm. to hear these talented young musicians perform on traditional Chinese instruments, many  of which have ancient origins.
Although the instruments may be ancient, the concept of playing Chinese instrumental music in a large ensemble resembling a western orchestra is a modern phenomenon that started in the 20th century in China.  Founded in 2000 by Gordon Lee, The Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra has grown to over 100 members,  aged  17 to 19 years old. In 2004 at the invitation of the People’s Republic of China, the Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra became the first Western Chinese orchestra to perform there.
