1920’s Paris has such a reputation for glamor, it evokes nostalgia even in people born far too late to experience it. For Hadley Richardson Hemingway, the protagonist of Paula McLain’s novel The Paris Wife, living in that famous time and place proves far more difficult. Just after WWI, Hadley gets swept off her feet by her handsome, charismatic new husband, the not-yet famous Ernest Hemingway, and moves to Paris with him. Far from being glamorous, being married to an American expatriate writer is a life of poverty and isolation for Hadley.
